Juan Carlos: "Selma gives me a certain peace of mind that I do not get from other ways of investing"
Interview / Clients
Hi, I'm Juan Carlos. 👋 I studied Economics at Harvard and Computer Science at Stanford. Currently, I work as a Research Assistant and Software Engineer in Lausanne. Aside from working, I enjoy football, astronomy and playing my guitar.
How do you feel about investing and the financial industry?
I think that it is very complicated to start investing, especially when you don’t have anyone to guide you through the process. There are all these crazy fees that you don’t understand and on top of that you need to worry about taxes and documents you need to prepare.
It’s all a bit hazy.
To make matters worse, I feel that good commercial banks, the ones you usually have a relationship with, are not good at offering viable, affordable, transparent investment products to their customers, which means that you need to open accounts with new institutions in order to invest. All of that paperwork and hassle is frustrating.

How did you get to know Selma?
I’m a big fan of Quora. I visit the site a couple times a week to read answers to interesting questions I wish I would’ve asked myself.
On one of my Quora outings I saw an ad for Selma. I think it read something like “How do I invest 5000 CHF in Switzerland?”.
Funnily enough, that was one of the questions I had been asking myself for a while. I visited the site, loved the interface, loved the premise and loved the customer support. So now Selma and I are good friends!

What makes Selma different?
I also feel that I can build a relationship with the people behind Selma.
Selma gives me a certain peace of mind that I do not get from other ways of investing. I feel that the paperwork is mostly taken care of, that the fees are transparent and that I can always get good insights into how my portfolio is doing.
I also feel that I can build a relationship with the people behind Selma. These personal interactions build trust. Once there is trust, then you can stop worrying about the day-to-day issues of investing and instead focus on the long term.
What should Selma improve?
Technically, I think Selma should be a bit more interactive and mobile-friendly. Perhaps a lightweight mobile app would be great.
Otherwise, I would love to see you guys more often in Lausanne and Geneva!
🌟 Bonus: Your investment story?
I had the opportunity to buy Bitcoins when they were at around 100 USD. But to be honest, I feel I would’ve sold it way before the big peak. In hindsight, that would’ve been an even sillier story to tell. 😀
